Welcome to the new home for the Kansas State Fire Marshal Office.

Fire Prevention Supplies

The Office of the State Fire Marshal has a limited stock of fire prevention supplies that it will provide to Kansas facilities, departments, and organizations that have a need for these items.   All requests must be completed on-line and are filled on a first-come first-served basis.

Please understand that the prevention budget is extremely limited and most prevention materials are costly. Materials must be used and distributed as effectively as possible.

Use and Distribution

Due to the limited funds available to purchase prevention materials, discretion will be used when distributing materials. Requested materials should be targeted at the particular audience and not just handed out so that we can say that materials were distributed (example: handing out Carbon Monoxide Brochures to preschool children would not be proper use of the material).

Locality

Fire Prevention materials should be provided to the citizens of the State of Kansas. Any agency, group, or organization requesting materials that is located outside of the State of Kansas will be referred to the fire agency in their state.

MATERIALS AVAILABLE

1. Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program

The Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program is available for Childcare Centers and Preschools who wish to participate.  This program will teach fire safety awareness and skills to children aged 3-5 in a structured educational environment.  In order to receive the program, the facility administrator will need to provide a statement that they will dedicate at least 1 week per year to fire prevention education activities.  Only 1 program will be issued per facility.

2. Sparky’s Activity Book – Grades 2-4

From the moment they open NFPA®'s Sparky's Activity Book, children will be wowed by an exciting and colorful 16-page learning adventure. This kid-friendly educational tool is fully loaded with all sorts of challenging and entertaining exercises that make fire safety concepts easy to understand and remember.  In order to receive the activity book, the facility administrator or teacher will need to provide a statement that they will dedicate at least 1 hour to fire prevention education activities.

3. Fire Safety Fun for Preschoolers

Youngsters will learn vital fire safe behaviors as the jump into the fun and tackle entertaining exercises.  The booklet has 8 pages of age-appropriate activities designed for non-readers.  In order to receive the activity book, the facility administrator or teacher will need to provide a statement that they will dedicate at least 1 hour to fire prevention education activities.

4. Sparky’s Coloring Book – Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Children will enjoy coloring while they learn the importance of concepts such as: Testing smoke alarms, home escape plans, different types of fire trucks and the jobs they do, cooking safety, and how to escape through smoke.  In order to receive the activity book, the facility administrator or teacher will need to provide a statement that they will dedicate at least 1 hour to fire prevention education activities.

5. Get to know EDITH DVD – Rental – Grades 2-3

E.D.I.T.H. -- Exit Drills In The Home. The video tells the engaging story of a group of friends who witness a fire on their way home from school. After learning that everyone got out safely because they practiced their escape plan, they decide to work with Sparky to make their own video showing how a typical family can protect themselves by making and practicing EDITH.  Designed to appeal to "older" Sparky fans who have basic reading abilities, the DVD supports language arts curriculum areas such as research and writing, and will encourage children to participate in those activities just like the kids in the video. A Presenter's Guide with supplemental print materials for classroom or take-home use are included on the DVD.

6. Various fun items

Plastic fire hats, erasers, stickers, and pencils are a big hit with young children. These items are considered “ice breakers” and possess little or no educational value. A limited supply will be obtained and distributed when funds are available. When available, these items will be supplied along with your request for any of the above (Items 1-5) materials.
