Fire Prevention Division
The Fire Prevention Division of the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal works to reduce the potential impact of fire and explosion hazards where people live, work, and congregate (other than one and two family dwellings). The Fire Prevention Division focuses on facilities posing distinct fire hazards and those places where the potential loss of life from fire is very high, including structures where the very young and very old live and congregate. We inspect preschools, child care centers, foster care, schools, colleges, universities, prisons, jails, residential board and care homes, hospitals, and nursing homes, as well as above-ground fuel storage and liquid petroleum gas facilities.
The division is responsible not just for fire safety features within many different types of buildings and facilities; it is also responsible for the promotion of fire safety and the education of building owners, operators, and occupants, and the general public. Both office and field personnel are active educators, presenting a variety of program topics across the state of Kansas.
The Fire Prevention Division consists of 12 field inspectors, five enforcement inspectors, three fire protection specialists, three administrative support personnel, and the division chief. Each field inspector has a specific territory assigned to them and they conduct all of the inspections within their territory.
What’s New:
2012 CMS Culture Changes
There are now four provisions of NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, 2012 ed., which have been adopted by CMS. These changes can only take place once a waiver has been submitted and approved by OSFM. This information is only applicable to facilities who receive funding from Medicare and/or Medicaid. To help facility administrators and staff better understand the requirements necessary to make these changes, OSFM has produced a Culture Change Handbook. Anyone who is considering making any of these changes are encouraged to obtain a copy of NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, 2012 ed., in addition to the handbook.
Prevention News - 1st Quarter 2012 Summer inspection schedule will begin in May. Facility owner/operators should use the following letters to help prepare your facilities for your inspection: Detention & Correctional Facilities
